Opening

Roza:

Ohnishi:

Roza: Hey everyone. Akino Roza here.

Chris: Hi guys, Chris McVay here. Strange lights in the studio, looks like Christmas illuminations.

Practice 9:52

Chris: So, are you ready for practice? Today, we are going to look at the word, then. And then basically indicates a shift of focus. If you imagine your head, you are looking straight and then … you move it one side and there is the shift of focus.

So, with that image in mind, let’s go, “I get up at six o’clock and then listen to Radio Eikaiwa.” OK, one more time, “I get up at six o’clock and then listen to Radio Eikaiwa.”

Roza: Let’s continue, “I’m going to the party too, so I’ll see you then.” Do you see how that then kind of switches the focus? One more time, “I’m going to the party too, so I’ll see you then.” “We’ve been friends since then.”

Chris: OK, a couple more, “Not good enough? I’ll have to write it again then.” “If you eat lots of vegetables, then you will feel healthier.” OK, the shift of focus is very clear there, “If you eat lots of vegetables, then you will feel healthier.”

Roza: And our last couple sentences, “OK, then. Let’s meet up at 10:30.” One more time, “OK, then. Let’s meet up at 10:30.” And one more, “Now then, what would you like to do today?”

Chris: Great job, guys.

Roza: Excellent work.

Do you see how that then (kind of) switches the focus?

Ending

Ohnishi: Phew, I’m tired.

Chris and Roza: Let’s call it a day.

All: Bye.
