Onishi:
Listening Challenge
Monday
David: OK, let's review this week's dialogs.
Roza: Listen to the questions and pick which one of the three options is the correct answer.
David: Let's start with Monday's dialog.
Roza: OK guys, here is the question.
How did Tom and his wife meet?
- He met her while taking a walk.
- He visited the restaurant where she works.
- They worked together in Osaka.
Here we go.
How did you do? Let's check out the question one more time.
Tuesday
David: All right, let's move on to Tuesday's dialog. Here is the question.
Which of the following is not true?
- William wants to be a real samurai.
- William has been to Japan.
- Roxy offers to practice Japanese with William.
Listen up.
All right, how did you do? Let's check out the question one more time.
Wednesday
Roza: OK, moving on, it's Wednesday's dialog. Here is the question.

- Go sightseeing with first time visitors.

Say It in English
Roza: OK, here is the situation.
Yeah, it would be. I have a plan to visit the zoo with my children and see penguins. They have been talking about it this week.
I don't want make them disappointed. I would ask my boss if I can take a day off.
Practical Usageのために作った Practical Usage の添削くん ですが、Say It in Englishでも使えます
- Yeah, it would be. → Yeah, it seems so.
“It would be” だと少し文脈的に曖昧になるので、“It seems so(そうみたいね)”が自然です。 - I have a plan to visit… → I was planning to take my children to the zoo…
- I don't want make them disappointed → I don’t want to disappoint them.
- I would ask my boss → I’ll ask my boss
- this week → all week
David: All right, let's move on to the next situation. Imagine this.
Can you see the man over there, close to the elevator? I suspect he follows us.
He is always behind us, so let's head into the crowd.
- 「I suspect he follows us」は文法的にはOKですが、「suspect」は少し硬くてフォーマル。
- 「He is always behind us」も意味は通じますが、「He’s been right behind us since we left the store(お店を出てからずっと後ろにいる)」とすると、時間の継続がきれいに伝わります。
Ending
Onishi: Hey guys, what's your favorite animal in the zoo?
David: In the zoo? Oh, it's easy, flamingo, flamingo, flamingo. I love flamingos.
Onishi: Why?
David: OK, one, the pink, two, they've got this long curvy beak, and three, they are standing on one leg, so they, why? what's up with there? I love it.
Roza: You know, I would say the cutest animal I've seen at a zoo is hyaena. I just, I remember seeing a hyaena sleeping and he was so, so cute.
Onishi:
Roza:
All: Bye.
