Opening

Ohnishi:

Roza: Hey everyone. Akino Roza here. You know, I’m glad relationships between us aren’t difficult.

Chris: Chris McVay here. Ah, you think so? I was just going to say, maybe it’s because we have no strange rules here. In fact, we have no rules at all as far as our openings are concerned. Let’s go.

Ohnishi:

Are you thinks so?

Practice 9:35

Chris: OK guys. Are you ready to practice? Today, let’s look at a variety of phrases that express the reason for something.

Are you ready?

  • That’s because you didn’t study hard enough.
  • That’s because I had no money.
  • That’s because he never liked her.

Roza: Continuing on,

  • That’s why he made that rule.
  • That’s why our textbooks are so popular.

Chris: OK, moving on to the next set of examples,

  • The reason for his success is that ~
  • The reason for her popularity is that ~
  • The reason for their breakup is that ~

Roza: And our last few examples,

  • The reason why I didn’t call you was that my battery was dead.
  • The reason that I didn’t call you was that my battery was dead.
  • The reason I didn’t call you was that my battery was dead.

Chris: OK guys, job well done.

Roza: Excellent work.

Ending

Ohnishi: Hey guys, we should always read instructions carefully, right?

Chris: Recently, I bought some bookshelves and I thought this was the easiest thing in the world so I didn’t look at the instructions … it was a disaster.

Ohnishi: Yeah, they would be so detailed.

All: Bye.

I thought this is ~ に聞こえますが、過去形にすべきかなと。
