Roza: Hey everyone. This is Akino Roza. Ready for today’s lesson?

David: And I’m David Evans. OK everyone. Let’s get ready to go.

Ohnishi:

Practice 10:20

David: All right everyone. It’s time to practice. Let’s get ready to go.

Roza: All right. Let’s start.

David: Our first phrases here use “may”. You can say “may”, nice and short to be direct or you can stretch “may” away out to be softer or show some hesitation.

Let’s try both patterns together. Here is the first.

  • You may want to hurry up.

OK, now let’s stretch that “may” to be a little softer.

  • You may want to reconsider.

Do you feel the difference? Let’s try one more.

  • You may want to take the time to really think about it.

Roza: That was great guys. Let’s move on.

  • If I were you, I wouldn’t worry too much about it.
  • If I were you, I wouldn’t give up.
  • If I were you, I wouldn’t let this chance slip past.

David: All right. Our next phrases use “Don’t even ~”. This is a strong suggestion, so let’s lean in to the verb here. “Don’t even try ~”. OK? let’s try it.

  • Don’t even try to fix this by yourself.
  • Don’t even think of lying to me.

Roza: You know what David? I think we’ve had enough of practice today. What do you think?

David: Yeah, that’s true. We may want to stop here.

Roza: Great job guys.

David: Excellent job.

→ stretch ~ out ですね。

Ending

Ohnishi:

All: Bye.
