Practice 10:20
Chris: OK, guys. It’s time to practice. Now here, we want you to grasp the basic feeling of run, which has two parts. One is speedy motion, speed, and the other, along a line. So, let’s practice with that in our mind.
“The buses run every 20 minutes.” You can feel the line with the buses are passing through, fast, fast, fast. So, after me, “The buses run every 20 minutes.”
And the same for trains, “The trains run every 20 minutes.”
Hum …, got it.
Roza: Here are some more examples, “The road runs around the campus.” “The path runs around the campus.” And one more, “The fence runs around the campus.”
Chris: OK, let’s move on. This one, “Time is running short.” Here, we’ve got the same feeling of speed, and on a line plus the idea of change. The normal length of time has changed to a short length. So, here we go, after me, “Time is running short.”
Once more, “Time is running short.”
Hum …
Roza: And these last few also have the run nuance.
“run a program”, “run a machine”, “run an engine”, two more, “run a check”, “run a test”.
Fantastic.
Chris: Well done, guys.
along a line か along the line かの聞き分けが難しいです。
and on a line としましたが、along a line か along the line かもしれません。
Ending
Ohnishi: Hey, look at the time. We are running late for the restaurant.
Chris: Well, in that case …
Chris and Roza: … Let’s run!
Ohnishi: というわけで今日はこの辺で。
All: Bye.
Roza: See you tomorrow.
