Practice 9:08
David: OK everyone. It’s time for practice today. Are you ready? The key here is speed. Slow equals serious, slow equals heavy, so if you speak slowly naturally, you are going to come across as very serious with these phrases, but for these, it’s OK.
Roza: Here, I want you to think about what word is important and emphasize it. This is an important part of communicating in English. So, let’s try it.
David: Let’s practice together.
- I will be yours forever.
- I’ll never leave you.
- I’ll never do it again.
- I’ll pay you back double.
Roza: Did you guys hear how David emphasize the words like “never” and “double”? Great work. Here is one more.
- I promise.
You heard the emphasis on “promise”, right?
David: All right. And these next ones use “I’ll see what I can do”. This is a very common chunk of speech, so remember it and put it in your pocket. Here we go.
- I’ll see what I can do, but I can’t promise anything.
- I’ll see what I can do, but I’m not making any promises.
Roza: You are excellent.
David: Great work everyone.
Ending
Roza: Hey David, are you going to Hokkaido next month?
David: I think I might, yes.
Roza: Can you bring me back some uni?
David: I’ll bring you back the highest quality uni. I promise … I’m not sure I can keep that promise. I’ll say this, I’ll see what I can do, but I can’t promise anything.
・・・・・
Ohnishi: というわけで、今日はこの辺で。
All: Bye.
