Opening

Chris, it’s your turn.

Chris: I know, Roza, why are you saying that? Chris McVay here, everybody. Let’s get started.

Ohnishi:

“historic and historical” 3:55

Ohnishi: What’s the difference between these two?

Chris: OK, I think you remember we talked about the difference between classic and classical. And this is similar. Historic means something really important or momentous that happened in history. Whereas historical is just talking about a period of time, history.

→ momentous(重要な)でした。

Roza: You know, I want to take you guys on a tour of our textbook today. Unfortunately, we don’t have enough time, so please check it out for yourself.

Practice 10:15

Chris: Hey, are you ready to practice? Yes, let’s get started. This time we are looking at tow, expressing a connection with a variety of emotions, and also, expressing the extent of something. So, with that in mind, let’s practice together. “to my disappointment”, “to my disgust”, “to my regret”, “to my relief”, “to my delight”, and one more, “to my satisfaction”, all kinds of emotions, as you can see.

Roza: In the next few examples, we are talking about extent. The point up to which something holds, so keep that in mind here, “to a certain extent”, “to the best of my knowledge”, “to my heart’s content”.

Chris: And the last few examples, actually point to the end point, point to the end point itself, for example, “It’s a quarter to seven.” “ten days to Christmas”, and the last one, “30 kilometers to Tokyo”.

OK, how did you do guys? I think you did brilliantly.

Roza: Fantastic work guys.

Ending

Ohnishi: Hey guys, ah, could you explain the nuance of “certain” in “to a certain extent”?

Roza: Sure, well, for example in number two, “I agree with you to a certain extent.” There is a certain extent, I know how much I agree with you, and I agree with up to that point, but that amount is not certain to the listener.

Chris: I think it’s helpful also, Roza,  we compare with some. You know, we often say “to some extent” and that’s very blurry, either ぼんやり type of meaning.

Ohnishi:

All: Bye.
