Opening

Ohnishi: Hey guys, I don’t want to be seen as a stylish English teacher.

Roza: Don’t worry, Sensei, nobody sees you like that.

David: Yeah, you are not.

Ohnishi: Then, what do people see me as?

Roza: I can’t say on the radio.

Ohnishi: ちょっとー!

ラジオ英会話、ハートでつかめ英語の極意、講師の大西泰斗です。

Roza: Hey everyone. Akino Roza here.

David: And I’m David Evans.

Ohnishi: それでは、さっそく始めていきましょう。

That Bill! 3:35

Ohnishi: Hey guys, could you explain the nuance of this “That Bill!”?

David: Yeah, usually “That Bill!” is expressing frustration or a little bit of anger.

Roza: Yeah, would be kind of like the Japanese word, あいつ!

Ohnishi: So, that includes the pointing-to image, right?

David: Oh, yeah, we are always pointing a finger.

Practice 8:50

Roza: All right everyone, it’s time to practice. Where you put that “not” is really important and it can change the meaning of the sentence. Keep the feeling of “not, 否定”, in your mind as you practice.

David: Remember the emphasis is on “not”, so this time let’s double the emphasis for practice, OK?

not to get distracted …

  • I want you not to get distracted.

don’t want you to get distracted …

Roza: All right, let’s keep going.

not being late …

David: OK, keep going.

not to have homework …

Roza: Keep it up.

not because of luck …

David: All right, and let’s wrap up with one more.

Not surprisingly …

  • Not surprisingly, Kevin was late.

David: Unlock your potential.

Roza: Repetition is the key.

Both: Great work.

David: Hum, Roza, do you …

Ohnishi: I quit.

Roza: Sensei, how people see you is not something you have to worry about. What’s important is how you see yourself.

Ohnishi: I see myself as a comedian.

Roza: いや、無理だね。

Ohnishi: というわけで、今日はこの辺で。

All: Bye.
